Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Beginning of a New Era – Movie Review

Commits to its larger-than-life sports anime premise and lets its female leads be almost terrifyingly competent athletes, giving them meaningful character arcs along to way, too.

(Updated) Let Me Fix You Anime’s Fate Uncertain After Animation Studio Implodes from Allegation of CEO’s Predatory Behavior (AniTrendz, Melvyn Tan)

While the victim has sadly recanted following threats of legal action, the former members of Buta Productions organized as Ponblue did post a statement in support of the victim.

Maryco has resurfaced on X with a post announcing their formal retraction of their accusations against Russo. “Involuntarily, I ended up embellishing, warping details of my narration as well as adding totally incorrect information,” reads the post. A follow-up reply wrote, “I’d like to apologise to all parties I’ve caused confusion and damages and I sincerely hope everyone can move on from this commotion.”

The post in which Maryco made the accusations and linked to a PDF containing screenshots of online conversations and descriptions of the situation is no longer available.

The retraction comes after a party using the Buta Productions name informed Anime News Network of their intention to sue “‘the person who made these defamatory accusations.’”

Before ‘Witch Hat,’ Kamome Shirahama Blessed Us With a Hilarious Romp About Gals Being Pals (Gizmodo, Isaiah Colbert)

Bring back short OVAs, just to adapt this series.

For comparison, Eniale and Dewiela’s dynamic gives Bayonetta and Jeanne a touch of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, but with the debauchery dialed down from a raucous 11 to a mischievous five. In Witch Hat Atelier terms, Eni and Dewi read like the proto-blueprint for Agott’s tsundere bite and Coco’s sheepish naïveté reimagined as a madcap buddy comedy duo. Watching Shirahama remove her limiters and let these two wreak havoc—whether sabotaging each other’s soul quotas or teaming up to do the bare minimum—is a delight. And when they’re not butting heads, they’re simply gals being pals: shopping, scheming, and trying to live their best lives.

What I love most about the manga is that it’s Shirahama fully in her comedic bag, writing slapstick gags with an elasticity and confidence that feel distinctly aged-up, in line with Witch Hat Atelier‘s gentler whimsy. With each chapter, you can feel her stretching, riffing, and letting herself be unserious in ways that WHA‘s tone doesn’t always allow. Coincidentally, the manga also teases her natural aptitude for sapphic-tinged storytelling that WHA fans—especially Arkco-truthers (we see you)—will clock immediately. Shirahama’s genuinely funny here, but she’s also effortlessly flexing her ability to weave emotionally stirring beats into her gag comedy manga.

Fantastic range of new and old titles for this one!

Mermaid Forest by Rumiko Takahashi, creator of Urusei Yatsura and Ranma ½. It's least known because it's a series of connected short stories, it's horror not comedy, and it had only one OKish anime movie.

it's special because it takes the legend about rating the flesh of the mermaid for immortality, and puts a horror spin on it. It's also very nicely drawn.
Alice 19th by Yuu Watase, better known for Fushigi Yugi. Teens fighting evil, magic, a focus on the power of words (literally and also figuratively), what more could you want? (Answer: more volumes!)

Free The Window of Orpheus from it's purgatory! Like what do you mean Riyoko Ikeda's spiritual successor to the Rose of Versailles that spans 18 volumes and deals with the Russian Revolution has not been fully translated?

I shouldn't say this publicly, but I would PAY for the honor of translating Glass Mask…

Naoki Urasawa's Yawara and Kedarui Yoru ni by Shungiku Uchida, the later of which isn't a big work by the artist, but deals with queer and transgender themes, so I'm personally interested in it.
