The 4th and final part of the 4-part watchalong of Michiko & Hatchin with Amelia, Vrai, and special guests Lizzie Visitante and Jacqueline-Elizabeth Cottrell! They look back on the series in light of its finale, dissect its portrayal of police brutality in the modern climate, and discuss the series’ importance to WOC.
Part 3 of the 4-part watchalong of Michiko & Hatchin with Amelia, Vrai, and special guests Lizzie Visitante and Jacqueline-Elizabeth Cottrell! They discuss the series’ casting issues, Atsuko’s character arc, and what it means for the series to have a female director and a male head writer.
Amelia and special guests Lizzie Visitante, Jacqueline-Elizabeth Cottrell, and Minami discuss their experiences with, and provide advice for, learning Japanese as women of color!
Part 2 of the 4-part watchalong of Michiko & Hatchin with Amelia, Vrai, and special guests Lizzie Visitante and Jacqueline-Elizabeth Cottrell! We talk about coding of desirability, particularly regarding thinness and whiteness; swoon over Atsuko, and discuss women in competition (or not).
Part 1 of the 4-part watchalong of Michiko & Hatchin with Amelia, Vrai, and special guests Lizzie Visitante and Jacqueline-Elizabeth Cottrell! They talk about the cultural context of the series, the fraught issue of on-screen portrayal without diverse casting, and whether the show accurately captures the culture of life in Brazil.
Amelia, Dee, and Peter look back on the Winter 2018 season! Highlights include: Ice and camp girl gushing, fantasy war lamentations, and a, er… mixed reception for some high-profile sequels and carryovers.
Part 4 and final part of the 4-part Kill la Kill watchalong with Amelia, Vrai, and special guest Miranda Sanchez! Amelia reassesses Mako, Vrai plants their flag on The Discourse (you know the one), and the group hashes out what a remake might bring to the table. All our thanks to Miranda for being a wonderful […]
Part 3 of the 4-part watchalong of Kill la Kill with Amelia, Vrai, and special guest Miranda Sanchez! This week, the crew discusses why it can be hard to talk critically about shows you loved as a teenager, why Deep Metaphors only work if you remember intersectionality, and why Satsuki deserves way better than That One Scene.
The team discusses the show’s unique place as the only Lupin property with a woman in the director or head writer’s chair, Fujiko’s uneven portrayals across time, and how the series pulls no punches in discussing sexuality, identity, and who controls women’s stories. Caitlin extols a straight relationship based on mutual respect, Vrai has a lot of feelings about their (really awful, really tragic) son, and Dee brings the thoughtful questions.
Part two of the four-part watchalong of Kill la Kill with Amelia, Vrai, and special guest Miranda Sanchez! Fashion gets an unfair shake. The StuCo is Good, but Satsuki is Best. As for Nui… maybe you don’t want to hear out thoughts on Nui.
Part 1 of the four-part watchalong of Kill la Kill with Amelia, Vrai, and special guest Miranda Sanchez! In this first episode, the team talks about the polarizing fandom reactions to the series—and has some polarizing reactions of their own. TRIGGER slaps the audience with a bucketful of aesthetic. Ryuko is Good Actually. Too bad the series keeps embarrassing her for titillation.
Amelia, Dee, and Peter check in on the Winter 2018 season.
Caitlin, Amelia, and Dee discuss Miss Hokusai, the 2015 feature film from Production I.G. Set in the early 1800s, this historical fiction follows real-life artist O-Ei as she navigates her relationships with her famous father, her young sister, and her own developing art in a society and profession dominated by men.
The team finishes out the OVAs in trademark rollercoaster fashion as they bask in one of the series’ highest highs, suffer through one of its lowest lows, and still come out the other side fighting for this messy, sincere franchise. Taka finds himself. Chichiri needs a hug. Mayo does everything wrong.
The multi-part Fushigi Yugi watchalong with Dee, Vrai, and Caitlin is back for a pair of bonus episodes covering the OVAs! Here in Part 1, the team talks Oni 1 and half of Oni 2. (Spoiler alert: It’s the angry half.) Studio Pierrot writes a drunken fanfic. Hotohori and Nuriko revisit some old haunts. Tasuki gets […]
Chatty AF is back from its winter break, and what better way to kick off the new year than by chatting about the flawed-but-ambitious series that’s been emotionally wrecking the anime community? Vrai, Peter, and special guest Dawn get together to discuss Masaaki Yuasa’s DEVILMAN crybaby!
Vrai, Dee, and Peter look back on the Fall 2017 season. With thoughtful blobs, lovable rocks, and flaming murder-sheep, it’s fun for the whole family!
Part 8 of the multi-part watchalong of Fushigi Yugi with Caitlin, Vrai, and Dee! As gods rise, characters fall, and the TV series comes to an explosive conclusion, the team discusses the highs and lows and argues for the show’s place in the anime canon.
Part 7 of the multi-part Fushigi Yugi watchalong with Dee, Vrai, and Caitlin! With the badlands safely behind them, the team returns to the show’s usual mixed bag of big adventure and even bigger emotions as the series heads into its action-packed home stretch. Yui phones home. Keisuke makes the Best Boy shortlist. Miaka’s thirst intensifies.
