The staff behind the Sailor Moon Super Live stage show announced that they will host performances in New York City. The show, which is billed as a “2.5D Musical,” will be held at the city’s PlayStation theater on March 29 and 30, and will be presented in Japanese with English subtitles.
The event will mark the first time hat a 2.5D musical has been performed in North America.
The Sailor Moon Super Live is the latest entry into the long-running series of Sailor Moon stage shows. Takahiro directed and choreographed the event, which features music by Hyadain and a story by Akiko Koyama.
Sailor Moon is based on Naoko Takeuchi’s manga of the same name. The manga ran Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine from 1991 through February 3, 1997, spanning eighteen compiled volumes.
The series spawned two anime adaptations. The original Sailor Moon anime ran from 1992 through 1997. The show saw Kunihiko Ikuhara (Penguindrum, Revolutionary Girl Utena), Junichi Satō (Aria The Animation, Magic User’s Club!), and Takuya Igarashi (Bungo Stray Dogs, Soul Eater) take the helm through the course of the show’s run. Toei Animation produced the title’s animation.
Sailor Moon Crystal is an ongoing anime project, which launched in Summer 2014. Munehisa Sakai helmed the first two seasons, while Chiaki Kon (Junjo Romantica) took the director’s chair at Toei Animation. Yukie Sakou served as as character designer on the project’s first two season, and was succeeded by Akira Takahashi (Smile PreCure). Yuji Kobayashi is in charge of series composition.
Viz Media currently holds the domestic rights to both Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon Crystal in North America.
