Netflix hosted a live streaming event for Neon Genesis Evangelion at 10:00PM Eastern (7:00PM Pacific) today. During the presentation, a 30-second trailer was shown for the show, which confirms that it will launch on Netflix on June 21.

On November 26, 2018, Netflix announced that they rescued the license for Neon Genesis Evangelion. The publisher acquired the full 26-episode TV series, as well as feature films Evangelion: Death(True)2 and End of Evangelion.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is an 1995 series from Hideaki Anno and Gainax. Anno (Gunbuster, Nadia – The Secret of Blue Water) directed the project, which featured character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (FLCL, Wolf Children).

Neon Genesis Evangelion Netflix VisualADV Films originally releaed Neon Genesis Evangelion in North America. They described the show as:

The year is 2015. As the remnants of the human race cower in subterranean cities, a deadly war is being waged for what is left of the planet. On one side are the mysterious beings known only as Angels; on the other, the secret agency NERV with mankind’s last hope, the awe-inspiring Evangelions. Piloted by a special team of young warriors, these giant bio-mechanical humanoids are the only thing that can withstand the force of the Angels’ defense fields long enough for the pilots to tackle the massive inaders in brutal hand-to-hand combat! At the same time, NERV struggles to pierce the veil of mystery surrounding the enigmatic Angels. High-tech action, blistering battle sequences, soul-ripping drama and spectacular visuals are seamlessly merged in the stunning animated series that ventures beyond the boundaries of space opera and questions the very nature of what it is to be human! Mankind’s last battle has begun in Neon Genesis EVANGELION!

Evangelion spawned two feature films: 1997’s Death & Rebirth and End of Evangelion.

In 2007, Studio Khara, led by Hideaki Anno, launched the Rebuild of Evangelion films: a four-film series that offers an alternate retelling of the events of Evangelion. Anno returned to serve as chief director, with Sadamoto again providing character designs.

To date, three films have been produced in the Rebuild of Evangelion line:

  • Evangelion 1.0: You Are [Not] Alone (2007)
  • Evangelion 2.0: You Can [Not] Advance (2009)
  • Evangelion 3.0: You Can [Not] Redo (2012)

Funimation currently holds the domestic rights to all three features. The company released Evangelion 3.0 on Blu-Ray in North America in 2016. The Blu-Ray, was delayed from a planned September 2013 launch, was co-produced by Studio Khara.
