My Ribdiculous Reincarnation – Episode 1

No name trying to sniff the goddess

What’s it about? Our nameless protagonist is a horndog who dies by being hit with a meteor in the middle of Tokyo, only to find himself in a world of gods and goddesses who are placing bets on how long reincarnated souls can survive in new settings.  Our no-name protagonist has the option to reincarnate as many times as he wants in bizarre stories, such as being the rib of a hero so that he can feel the women hugging him.  What will he reincarnate into next? Stay tuned!

Does anyone remember Dead Like Me? The protagonist in that series died being hit by a flying toilet from space, and I honestly couldn’t stop laughing once I remembered that show.  I’m thankful to this premiere for that reminder and for not letting truck-kun strike again.  I’ll be frank, there’ll be folks who either hate or love this show solely based on the protagonist.  He’s an absolute pathetic loser who not only does anything to get women’s attention, but will also reincarnate into stupid stories for the sake of being “touched” by women.  In a lesser story, he’d be a revered protagonist. Here, he’s rightfully mocked and punished for being a creep.

Truck-kun finally decided to take a break this season.

It also helps that the story actively ridicules the entirety of the isekai genre and how it’s essentially become a genre for generic dudes to live out their lame fantasy harem dreams.  The fact that so many of them were waiting in a line up that could take 50,000 years until it’s their turn to live out their dreams is downright pitiful.  I suppose the most refreshing aspect about no name is that he’s completely honest about who he is and doesn’t try to pretend he’s a great person.  The women characters are surprisingly not sexualized and every attempt by no-name to leer at the goddess’ breasts is met with nothing from the camera.  They could’ve easily made a joke about her being flat chested like most low-tier shows do, but it doesn’t — I know, I’m shocked too.  I don’t want to give this show too much credit since I don’t think it actively wants to give a smart critique, but boy do I enjoy seeing no-name suffer after reviewing dozens of generic power fantasies.

The use of different animation styles took me by complete surprise.  The colorful and cartoonly style for the gods and goddesses gave them such an other worldly atmosphere to an otherwise contradictory premise.  Even the animation in no name’s rib adventure reminded me of certain segments of a movie made by the Soviet Union called The Snow Queen(1957).  It all blended so well together, and the fact that it’s for a horrible protagonist we actively want to see fail adds to the joke.  As mentioned before, our viewers will either hate or love this premiere depending on if you see this as a comedy that is making fun of the current state of isekai or generally just hate the protagonist.  No name is a hard sell and frankly, it’s understandable, if folks decide to drop this series because of him.

I mean look how silly and creative this looks! The animators deserve all the praises!!

I have no idea where I stand in this debate.  I wasn’t expecting to like this premiere, let alone, be amused.  I’m definitely curious to check out a few more episodes just for the variety of animation styles alone.  I’m truly on the fence with this one folks, it’s really up to personal taste at this point.  I can’t say I’ll continue watching it since I’m far too busy with my real life problems, but if folks have an interesting update on this, please let me know!
