I think there might be a funny, clever little magical girl show buried in this premiere. I’m not sure, though—I’m still recovering from the episode’s decision to strip its protagonist naked for the third act, blinding me with shiny, shiny moeblob flesh.
Minoa Asagaya is a new high school student in Sakaneko Private High School. Despite being a novice to anime, Minoa’s classmate Arisu Kamiigusa invites her to make an “anime research club” at school. Through conversations with her classmate Miko Kōenji, as well as various anime-loving upperclassmen, Minoa gradually gets hooked on anime. While they stand against the student council’s continuous efforts to disband their club, and they ignore the impending end of the world, they talk about anime, whether in Akiba, or in real-life “sacred place” anime settings, or the hot springs.
Three high school girls are putting together a limited-time shop called “PARK” in Japan’s Harajuku. One day, aliens come to Earth with the intent to steal the famed district’s culture. Source: Anime News Network If I were to describe Urahara in one word, it would be “pastel.” Adding “as fuck” is up to each individual’s discretion. Given a few more words, I could assure you that this is one of the most frustrating sorts of premieres: the kind that’s a slog until the last five minutes or so, at which point a promising hook tries to tempt you back in spite of the 15 miserable minutes prior.
In the year 2045, the world has been contaminated by Irōsu (mysterious invaders who suddenly appeared), and humans find themselves restricted and contained. Standing boldly against these invaders are ordinary girls everywhere, without a powerful army or even weapons. Source: Anime News Network The first 66 seconds of this premiere spend 24 of those seconds introducing 14 young schoolgirls who will presumably become equally important. That’s 14 character introductions in 24 seconds as they sit in a classroom, doing their best to extol the one trait which will tell each of them apart, as their names flash up next to each of them on screen. It’s a lazy, overdone approach to introducing large ensembles, and one which suggests endearing audiences to the characters is a low priority. And frankly, Battle Girl High School is pretty lazy and overdone overall.

Congrats, you’ve seen this one too. Cute mascot, transformation item, an awkward first battle reminiscent of Sailor Moon, the whole nine yards. That’s not a knock on it–the magical girl genre is as storied as sentai, and there are plenty of viewers who find that familiar sort of tale comforting. Just don’t come looking for any wild twists.

Cocona is a middle school student who is struggling to decide where to go to high school. One day she is dragged away from those troubles into a place she doesn’t recognise, with no-one but a robot and a strange girl in strange clothes who flies through the air on a surfboard and tells Cocona she has been expecting her.
Matoi lives with her police detective dad and works as a shrine maiden, just wanting a normal life. One day the shrine is attacked by a suspect in the case her dad is working on, only his form changes and becomes monstrous, needing something magical to exorcise him.
Koyuki has always loved magical girls, but now she’s in middle school all of her friends have grown out of it. The only chance she gets to indulge in her passion is in smartphone game Magical Girl Raising Project. However, one evening the game tells her she has been selected to become a real magical girl, just as she always wanted! The only thing is that she’s not the only one, and not everyone is thrilled to meet her.
